Microwave processing is relatively advanced and unfamiliar technique of joining metals and ceramics. Microwave energy has been effectively used in the processing of different materials. It has been introduced in the field of manufacturing and design due to its various advantages over other welding/joining techniques such as - short heating time, hybrid heating, saving energy etc. Microwave heating leads to generation of inverted temperature profile and provides selective heating and as well as volumetric heating. Joining of bulk pieces of similar/dissimilar metals which have high thermal conductivity is really challenging. Microwave processing has numerous advantages over traditional methods of heating. It has been commonly used in various industrial, scientific and medical applications for processing, drying and heating. In the past years, various works has been done on polymers, ceramics except metals by using microwave radiations. Many initiatives have been taken to explore this advanced and emerging technique in various fields of engineering.

Joining of metals using microwave radiations is really an innovative idea in the field of research. In this paper, Graphite plate is used as a separator, Nickel based powder is used as the interfacing material, Mild Steel (MS) and Stainless Steel (SS) are used as substrates. This paper elaborates the use of Taguchi experimental design technique for maximizing hardness of microwave welded joints. Using ANOVA and signal to noise ratio of robust design, effect on hardness of Microwave joining process parameters (Exposure Time, Interfacing Material and Substrates) is evaluated and optimum welding condition for maximizing hardness is determined.Keywords

The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a modern solid phase joining technique of aluminium alloys for producing high quality joints. In this paper, the effect of process parameters of friction stir welded joint of A6061 and A6082 Alloys on microstructures and percentage elongations have been investigated. Joints are fabricated according to L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi approach. ANOVA is implemented for analyzing the responses with respect to input process parameters (tool rotational speed, tool tilt angle and types of tool pin profile) as the raw data and S/N ratio analysis. The observation revealed minimum variation of microstructure in base metals and dissimilar welded region. The result indicates that the most significant process parameter is rotational speed of tool with percentage contribution of 78.87 % followed by tool pin profile with 15.12 % and tool tilt angle with 5.90 %. The optimum combination of process parameters was found by conducting confirmation test. The predicted and experimental values of percentage elongation of joints are 6.347 % and 6.286 % respectively.
